1. Research and Learn
Gone are the times where what the organizational structure of your last job will be exactly similar as your new job. While you may have the same title from one company to another, it’s important that you take the time to research the latest updates and practices of the job industry that you are interested in.
This doesn’t have to be super complicated. Do a quick google search, attend networking events, reach out to people who are well known in your industry.
And be sure to learn from all of them.
2. Transferable Skills
It’s absolutely wonderful to have a degree and certain certifications. But often, job candidates are mostly relying on their degrees and certificates to secure their next position. While it’s great to have many years of experience in a field, it’s even more important to have taken the time to develop skills that are transferable. Ask yourself, “What skills do I know that my next employer will find valuable?” If you aren’t sure how to answer this question, go back to tip number one. Take the time to research and learn the skills employers value.
3. Self-Improvement
The best way to make sure that you are always standing out from the competition, is to always study your craft and grow in your self- improvement. For example, you should be striving to improve not just the duties of the job but how to improve as a human being and also as an employee. How well do you communicate with other? Are you able to follow as well as you lead?
4. Update Resume
When was the last time you looked over your resume?
Your resume should be updated before you start applying for new positions. You should also update it to reflect the job duties of the exact position you want to be hired for. For example, if you were previously a teacher but are not seeking a job as a nurse, be sure to include the job duties that are most important and relevant to nursing positions.
5. Be Passionate
With all the latest technology updates, it’s easy to forget what bonds us to others. Human beings are intelligent, creative, compassionate creatures whose hearts are full of passion for the things that interest them. When you go to an interview, be sure to speak of the things that qualify you for the position but also do your best to share the hobbies that bring great joy to your loving heart.
